<hi style=afpcap>The Salmson 2A-2 was a heavy observation design which was acquired by the American Expeditionary Force from its French manufacturer. The 2A-2 along with the Breguet 14 were obtained when it became apparent that the American built 'Liberty planes' would not be available for service as scheduled. More than 700 Salmsons were obtained, which were unusual in that they were powered by a water cooled radial engine, and lacked a fixed fin and tailplane. The 2A-2 was armed with a single Vickers and a twin Lewis gun.</hi>
